Popular support of the current administrations in Latin America.

According to this report of Mitofsky…

The presidents: Berger from Guatemala (83%), Uribe From Colombia (81%) and Kirchner from Argentina (80%) have the highest levels of popularity. On the other hand Panama and Peru have the lowest levels (15 and 8% respectively).

Since there is a positive relationship between popular support and the probability of a coup in the Latin-American region, these are important figures. The situation of Guatemala seems very positive. The current administration is taken important steps toward the investigation of accusations of corruption and money laundry of important members of the last administration (including the president). This seems to be a golden opportunity to promote accountability.

Que mandatarios tienen mas apoyo popular en Amercia Latina?

Berger de Guatemala (83%), Uribe de Colombia (81%) y Kirchner de Argentina (80%), tienen la mayor aprobacion popular de sus gobiernos. Los gobiernos de Panama y Peru tienen los niveles de aprobacion mas bajos (15 y 8% respectivamente).

Es la aprobacion popular importante? Para los paises latinoamericanos si lo es, debido a que el riesgo de un golpe de estado aumenta cuando la aprobacion popular disminuye. La situacion de Guatemala es muy buena, espero que no se deba solo al hecho de que Berge es un presidente nuevo. Es comun ver que la popularidad disminuye con el tiempo.

Guatemala on NPR!

Guatemala, the land of eternal spring on NPR.I think that Guatemalans’ mentality has been changing towards democracy, rejecting “caudillismo”. In this particular point NPR is not accurate. I admit that some Guatemalans feel nostalgic for the strength of some dictators (that used to killed those who commit crimes; mi grandma told me that stealing a chicken was enough reason to be shot), I don’t think that this opinion is hold by the majority of Guatemalans. This would be the equivalent of saying that the majority of Dominicans misses Trujillo’s years.

La hisotria de Guatemala ha sido dolorosa: colonialismo y pobreza. Escuchen la version de NPR. Creo que la mentalidad guatemalteca ha estado cambiando en favor de un regimen democratico y alejandose del modelo caudillista. En este punto me parece que la version de NPR no es correcta. Admito que hay personas que tienen nostalgia por los viejos tiempos, cuando el caudillo mataba a los agresores aun cuando el delito era pequenio (mi tia-abuela cuenta que robarse una gallina era delito suficiente para ser fucilado), pero no me parece que esto piense la mayoria de Guatemaltecos. Esto equivaldria a decir que la mayoria de dominicanos extranian los tiempos de Trujillo.

A Quixote in Mexican Politics!!!

Three parties—PRD, PRI and PAN, have dominated the Mexican political spectrum. However, recently a former foreign affairs minister, Jorge Castañeada, will launch a fourth platform.

According to this article, his probability of winning the presidential elections in 2006 is low. But considering the alternatives, we shouldn’t be surprised if he wins.

Public Choice theory suggests that candidates will present similar platforms to the constituencies; these platforms should coincide with the median voter’s preferences. If this is the case, Mexicans shouldn’t have high expectations about Castañeada. Nevertheless, Public Choice also suggest that in some cases the candidates can move voter’s preferences through campaigns. It this is the case Mexicans would benefit from the rule of law and impulse to technology, that are main components of Castañeada’ platform. He however is unwilling to privatized PEMEX, which is a debatable issue…

Un Quijote en la política mexicana!

El espectro político mexicano ha sido dominado por tres partidos – el PRD, el PRI, y el PAN—. Sin embargo, recientemente Jorge G. Castañeda, ex ministro de relaciones exteriores piensa romper con la tradición, lanzando un partido independiente.

De acuerdo a este articulo (en www.hacer.org), sus posibilidades son bajas, pero podría dar una sorpresa; sobre todo si tomamos en cuenta el desgaste político de los principales contendientes.

La teoría económica sobre política sugiere que los candidatos lanzaran plataformas muy similares, que coinciden con las preferencias del votante en la media. Si este es el caso, los mexicanos no debieran esperar un cambio sustancial en el estilo de gobierno de Castañeada (en el caso de que ganara). Sin embargo, la teoría también contempla que los candidatos pueden “mover” las preferencias de los votantes y ganar las elecciones, si este es el caso, el estilo de Castañeada, podría beneficiar a los mexicanos, sobre todo por sus ideas en defensa del estado de derecho e impulso de la tecnología. Castañeada no pretende privatizar PEMEX, este punto es discutible...

Good movie!

Monsieur Ibrahim. This movie takes place in Paris in the early 60s and describes the way in which two stories converge: a Jewish child (Momo) met a Muslim vendor (Ibrahim); their friendship grows at the extent that when Memo becomes orphan, he “adopts” Ibrahim as his father. They make a trip to Turkey showing beautiful landscapes. This movie is for those who want to remember their teenager years, want to listen to good rock and roll, and want to think about great lines like: “smoothness is the secret of happiness”, or “all the rivers goes to the same ocean”.

Esta cinta se desarrolla en Paris de los anios 60's y describe la forma en que dos historias se cruzan, un ninio judio (Momo) conoce a un vendedor musulman (Ibrahim); su amistad crece a tal grado que cuando Momo queda en horfandad decide adoptar a Ibrahim como su padre. Curioso no, bien, ambos realizan un viaje por Turquia donde se observan paisajes impresionantes. Esta pelicula es para aquellos que desean recordar sus anios de adolescencia, quieren escuchar un buen rock and roll (o yeye), y desean reflexionar sobre lineas como "la suavidad es el secreto de la felicidad" o, "todos los rios conducen al mismo mar".

It is the massive destruction of books and libraries with the goal of destroying part of a culture. Fernando Báez in his book “Vintila Horia” describes the history of the destruction of books. This event just happened when the National Library of Baghdad was destroyed. Baez is afraid that the same can happen with the Library of Congress in the US.
